Meet the Midwest: The Iron’s Road Through the USPHL
If you’re new to junior hockey, here’s the lay of the land. The Danville Iron compete in the United States Premier Hockey League (USPHL) Premier division — one of the largest and most respected junior leagues in North America — and we’ll be battling it out in the Midwest Division. For our fans, that means one thing: a schedule packed with regional rivalries, short bus rides for road trips, and hard-nosed hockey against teams that don’t like us any more than we like them. Just the way we want it.
What is the USPHL Premier?
The USPHL Premier is a Tier III junior league for players roughly 16 to 20 years old who are chasing the next level. This is the proving ground. It’s where young players sharpen their game, add strength and structure, and put themselves in front of scouts on the road to college hockey — NCAA Division III, ACHA programs, and the USPHL’s own top tier, the NCDC. Junior hockey has always been the backbone of player development in the American game, and the USPHL pathway is one of the clearest routes from the local rink to a college roster.
For Danville, landing a USPHL Premier club brings credibility and a long-term opportunity. This isn’t a beer-league novelty — it’s structured, competitive, development-focused hockey, and the Palmer is now back on the map as a junior hockey barn.
Our neighborhood: the Midwest Division
The beauty of the Midwest Division is that our rivals are right next door. Expect to see clubs from across Illinois, Indiana, and the surrounding region rolling into the David S. Palmer Arena — programs like the Chicago Crush, Metro Jets, Cincinnati Cyclones, Fresh Coast Freeze, Flint Icelanders and Evansville Mariners. (Divisions can realign season to season, so keep an eye on our schedule for the final slate.)

Regional alignment is a fan’s best friend. Tight geography means more games against teams you’ll see over and over — and nothing builds a rivalry faster than playing the same club six, eight, ten times a year. By the back half of the season, when the standings tighten and playoff seeding is on the line, those divisional matchups turn into must-watch, edge-of-your-seat hockey. Four-point games. Chippy third periods. The kind of atmosphere that makes you glad you’ve got a ticket.
Why it matters for the season ahead
Every point in the standings runs through the division. Win your home games, take care of business against your neighbors, and you set yourself up for a deep playoff push and a shot at a USPHL National Championship berth. That’s the goal. As a first-year club, the Iron know we’ll have to earn respect one shift at a time — but there’s no better place to do it than in a division this competitive.
So get familiar with the names on the schedule. Pick the rivalry you love to hate. And come help us defend the Palmer.
